Pre-Launch Checklist

At the beginning of each boating season, there’s a list of necessary maintenance steps and safety checks. However, there are also some quick checks you should do every time you put your boat in the water.

+ Top off the fuel tank. Believe it or not, running out of fuel is the biggest single boating hazard.

+ Perform a cursory overall inspection. We’re not talking about an hour-long inspection, just a quick once-over.

+ Check the bilge, looking for water or fuel.

+ Test all systems. Before loading, make sure the engine, blower, bilge pump and lights are all running smoothly.

+ Don’t forget to insert the drain plug. It sounds obvious, but go ahead and check it anyway.

Federal law requires that you carry at least one wearable (Type I, II or III) Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for each passenger, as well as one throwable (Type IV) PFD. There are many different styles, designed to be comfortable for every activity. And most importantly, each passenger should have one that fits properly, especially children and non-swimmers.
